A psychoactive drug obtained from khat, Catha edulis, an evergreen shrub native to East Africa. Cathine ingestion has amphetamine-like effects and the drug is classified by the World Anti-Doping Agency as a stimulant. The Agency regards cathine as a prohibited in-competition substance when concentration of cathine in urine is greater than 5 μg l−1.
