A family of transcription factors (CCAAT-box enhancer binding proteins) that promote the expression of proteins involved in a range of cellular activities including the control of cellular proliferation, growth, and differentiation and have a role in the development and maintenance of metabolically important processes including adipocyte differentiation. They form homo- or heterodimers that bind to the CCAAT box motif in DNA and then recruit coactivators.
