(1884–1966). Essayist and writer of prosa d'arte, who was also a prolific and influential critic, journalist, and art historian. He began his career as a literary critic in Florence, where he was born, writing for the avant-garde journal Leonardo, and then for La Voce, to which he contributed regularly on the work of authors from a number of different countries in the years leading up to World War I. He was particularly interested in Anglo-American culture, and published a history of 19th-c. English literature in 1915. He continued to review books for important national dailies until the end of his life.
