Swedish astronomer, best known for his temperature scale. He was professor of astronomy at Uppsala, and in 1742 he advocated a metric temperature scale with 100° as the freezing point of water and 0° as the boiling point; however, the thermometer which was actually introduced at the Uppsala Observatory had its scale reversed.
