center of excellence

Quick Reference

An academic and research setting, usually an integral part of a university, school of public health, or comparable center of advanced study, that is identified and recognized by peers and funding agencies as a place where outstanding original work has been done, is being done, and is expected to continue to be done in the future. To some extent, centers of excellence are defined by the reputation they acquire, but governmental and other funding agencies may seek deliberately to establish them. Examples in the latter category include the specialized research units established with long-term funding by the UK Medical Research Council, and the clinical research center of the US National Institutes of Health.

Subjects: Public Health and Epidemiology.
