centre-surround receptive field

A type of receptive field characteristic of retinal ganglion cells and bipolar cells with a central ON area in which stimulation tends to excite neural responses and a surrounding OFF area in which stimulation tends to suppress neural responses by lateral inhibition, so that the strongest response occurs when only the central region is stimulated; the term also applies to a receptive field with a central OFF area and a surrounding ON area.
