Quick Reference

A group of artists and craftsmen, founded in 1882 by Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo (1851–1942), whose aim was to widen the scope of what was regarded as art to include activities which were then regarded more as the prerogative of the tradesman than the artist, such as ‘building, decoration, glass-painting and sculpture’. Much of the work they produced was in an early Art Nouveau style, using whiplash curves and foliage with long, flowing tendrils.

Subjects: Decorative Arts, Furniture, and Industrial Design.
