(Verdi: Rigoletto). Bass and mez. Guests of the Duke of Mantua. At a ball in the ducal palace, the Duke is much taken with the Countess. The Duke's jester, Rigoletto, comments on this and the Count's jealousy is aroused. His determination to take revenge on Rigoletto by abducting the girl believed to be the jester's lover (but in reality his daughter) sets in motion the rest of the opera. Created (1851) by Andrea Bellini and Luigia Morselli.
