A family of one genus (Certhia) of small, brownish birds, streaked above and white below, that have slightly curved bills. They are short-winged, have long claws, stiff, pointed tail feathers, and are weak fliers. They inhabit forests, nesting in crevices, and are insectivorous, foraging by climbing vertically up tree and rock surfaces. There are six species, found in N. America, Europe, and Asia. The monotypic family Salpornithidae (spotted creeper) is sometimes included.
