Bitter-tasting toxic glycoalkaloids (alpha- and beta-chaconine), related to solanine and solanidine, found in potatoes (Solanum tuberosum), where they are produced in increased amounts as a stress response. The cytotoxic effects have been investigated for chemotherapy and alpha-chaconine is reported to induce apoptosis of HT-29 cells through inhibition of ERK and activation of caspase-3.
