Abrasion caused by mechanical friction, where two areas of skin rub together (e.g. in the groin) causing redness and tenderness of the skin. Chafing that results from movements during exercise can be reduced by applying petroleum jelly to areas that are likely to rub together (e.g. the inner thighs and nipples of runners).
