Battle of Chaldiran

Quick Reference

Battle in 1514 between the Ottoman Empire and the Persian Safavid dynasty. The Ottoman victory resulted in annexation of eastern Anatolia and northern Mesopotamia, Ottoman control over trade routes between Tabriz, Aleppo, and Bursa, and conquest of Arabian Peninsula and Mamluk territories in Egypt and Syria by 1517. The Safavid defeat permanently discouraged Safavid aspirations in Anatolia and shattered belief in the shah's invincibility.
