(1675–1741), sea captain, divided his time between trading and missionary voyages and preaching his Quaker gospel in England and the colonies. He appears in Whittier's Snow-Bound as the “gentlest of skippers, rare sea-saint.” His simple Journal (1747), recounting both his adventures and his quiet religious life, was widely admired by Quakers.
