Scottish Congregational missionary and explorer. After ordination, in 1866 he sailed for Rarotonga in the South Pacific. There he did much to make the Church indigenous before sailing for New Guinea in 1877. He slowly won the confidence of the people. He tried also to establish peaceful relations with the peoples of the Fly River region but was brutally killed in the Gulf of Papua.
