The author of Chambers's Encyclopaedia, who in 1844 published anonymously a book called Vestiges of a Natural History of Creation, in which he revived the idea of evolution first proposed by Lamarck 30 years earlier. The book's popularity and notoriety refocused attention on this issue and so paved the way, among the general public, for Darwin's Origin of Species.
