Describing an abnormally low and flattened palatal arch as defined by the palatal index. The palatal arch height may also be described as intermediate (orthostaphyline), or deep ( hypsistaphyline). The palatal arch width can be of moderate width ( mesostaphyline), having a palatal index of 80 to 85. A narrow palate with a palatal index of up to 80 is described as leptostaphyline and a wide palate as brachystaphyline if over 85.
