The kingdom of the Chams, a Malay people, said to have been founded in the 2nd century ad in Vietnam. It was frequently at war with the Khmers to its west and succumbed in the 15th century to Annam to the north. Its people are commemorated in Angkor: in a bas-relief of a battle against the Khmers they are distinguished by their flat hats, each one decorated with a flower.
