Champernowne was born on 9 July 1912 in Oxford where his father, Francis Gawayne, was the bursar of Keble College. He died in Cambridge on 19 August 2000. He belonged to the Dartington line of the Champernowne Family who had lived in South Devon for over 500 years, for the most part in the splendour of Dartington Hall and its picturesque surrounding countryside.
