Quick Reference

Known especially for his scholarly editions of Jane Austen's novels (1923) and letters (1932) and S. Johnson’s letters (1952). These involved treating novels and tracing MSS with the systematic textual scrutiny and rigour previously reserved for major dramatists and poets. As Secretary to the Delegates of the Clarendon Press, Chapman significantly advanced the New (Oxford) English Dictionary.
