(1020–77)

Major Neo-Confucian figure who provided a metaphysical basis for ethics, deriving from the unity of creation. Underlying all phenomena is material force (ch'i), which in turn he identifies with the Tao (Way) of Taoism and with the Supreme Ultimate (t'ai chi) of the Book of Changes. The virtue of the sage is to understand and accept this fundamental unity.
