## Quick Reference

Let **A** be a square matrix. Then det (**A**−λ**I**) is a polynomial in λ and is called the characteristic polynomial of **A**. The equation det(**A**−λ**I**)=0 is the characteristic equation of **A**, and its roots are the characteristic values of **A**. See also Cayley-Hamilton Theorem.
