(1595–1651),

French Dominican spiritual writer. In La Croix de Jésus (1649) he argued that just as the grace given to Christ impelled Him to choose suffering and crucifixion, and even a sense of abandonment by God, so grace in the believer typically leads to crosses and desolation, even if consolations and ‘mystical phenomena’ may accompany the earlier stages of the spiritual life. Through desolation the soul comes to rely on God alone.
