Quick Reference

A Mexican event based upon horseback parades and contests, established as a way of preserving the traditions of the charros (cowboys) in the period of the break-up of the haciendas after the Mexican Revolution. The national association was established in 1921, and the genre was featured in the emerging film industry, so profiling (and romanticizing) the practices of the traditional horseman in modern entertainment forms. The event is judged rather than timed, and is primarily amateur, with modest prizes.
