The fleshy prominence either side of the face between the ear and mouth and below the eye. It is covered by skin externally and by non-keratinized mucosa internally except at the occlusal level, where there is a whitish horizontal line (linea alba). The cheek contains the duct of the parotid gland (Stensen's duct), exiting at the parotid papilla and numerous minor salivary glands. Biting of the buccal mucosa (cheek biting) may occur as a result of a malocclusion, alteration of the chewing cycle, or due to parafunction or a parafunctional habit.
