The process that is assumed to have led to the origin of life on Earth more than 3300 Ma ago. The classical view is that lightning discharges in the Earth's early atmosphere produced the basic organic molecules from which, after they had dissolved in the oceans, life was assembled. How the assembly was achieved is still largely a matter of conjecture.
