Quick Reference

A region of the upper atmosphere between altitudes of 40 and 80 km in which chemical processes driven by sunlight are significant. The chemosphere overlaps the upper stratosphere and the mesosphere. Chemical processes taking place at this level include the formation of ozone by the action of sunlight on oxygen, and various reactions involving oxides of nitrogen. The term is not in regular use by meteorologists.
