Quick Reference

A board game of strategic skill for two players, played on a chequered board. Each player begins the game with a king, a queen, two bishops, two knights, two rooks (or ‘castles’), and eight pawns, which are moved and capture opposing pieces according to precise rules. The object is to put the opponent's king under a direct attack from which escape is impossible (checkmate). Recorded from Middle English, the word comes from Old French esches, plural of eschec ‘a check’.
