A post created in Wales under the Care Standards Act 2000 and in England by the Children Act 2004. Independent of government, the role of the Commissioner is to promote awareness of the views and interests of children. He is not generally permitted to conduct investigations into the cases of individual children, but is allowed to do so where the case has wider policy relevance for other children not directly involved.
