Quick Reference

A province of southern Chile (derived from Chile and hué, ‘port’), a name which occurs frequently in English books of voyages of the 16th–18th centuries. It was the first sight of land—and therefore vastly welcome—to mariners as they entered the Pacific either round Cape Horn or through the Straits of Magellan. Chiloé is also an island, part of the province of the same name.
