Chinese gooseberry is the original English name of the fruit now almost universally known as the kiwi fruit. The fruit comes from China, and was introduced into New Zealand in the early years of the twentieth century; the name Chinese gooseberry was hence almost certainly coined in New Zealand, and it is first recorded in an October 1925 issue of the Auckland Weekly News.
