Oblong block of wood, 7″ or 8″ long, with slots cut in it. Struck with stick of a snare drum gives a hard, hollow tone. Other names are clog box and tap box. Used in jazz and by 20th‐cent. composers, e.g. Lambert in Rio Grande, Walton in Façade, Prokofiev in 5th and 6th Syms., and Cage in Amores.
