A structure resembling the Greek letter χ, formed by cleaving a dimeric circle with a restriction endonuclease that cuts each DNA circle only once. The parental monomeric duplex DNA molecules remain connected by a region of heteroduplex DNA at the point where crossing over occurred. Thus, the identification of such chi structures provides evidence for cross-over events taking place between circular DNA molecules.
