Circular DNA, like that of mitochondria but several times larger, which is found in chloroplasts and other plastids and contains genes involved in the photosynthetic pathway. It is independent of nuclear DNA and is maternally inherited. Between 40 and 80 DNA molecules occur in each organelle.
