A situation in which the animal can make a simultaneous discrimination amongst alternatives. Normally, an animal will choose the alternative that brings it the greatest short-term gain. Sometimes, however, animals show behavioural sampling of lesser alternatives. This is thought to be a strategy that results in a long-term gain in utility.
