An important protein (dorsalizing factor, 955 aa) that binds to the ventralizing TGFβ family of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and antagonizes their effects during development. Chordin mRNA and protein levels are down-regulated in osteoarthritic chondrocytes. Other BMP antagonists are follistatin, gremlin, noggin, and sclerostin.
