Bp. of Metz and a prominent ecclesiastical reformer. He was chief minister to Charles Martel and Pepin III, holding political office even after he became Bp. of Metz (probably some time between 724 and 747). He succeeded St Boniface as apostolic delegate in the Frankish realm in 754. In 748 he founded the abbey of Gorze and he caused the canons of his cathedral to live a community life, drawing up for them the ‘rule’ that bears his name (c.755). This allowed them to hold private property. He also introduced the Roman chant and liturgy into his diocese. Feast day, 6 May.
