Quick Reference

A test used for determining sex. It involves staining a thin scraping from inside the cheeks (a buccal smear) using a nuclear dye and a fluorescent compound. The former stains a dense body (the Barr body) on the X chromosomes, while the latter reveals the Y body associated with the Y chromosome. See also sex determination.
