(b Lübthen, Mecklenburg, 1826; d Bergedorf, nr. Hamburg, 1901).

Ger. critic and music historian. Authority on Handel, editing complete works for Ger. Handel Soc., some of the vols. being subsidized by sale of produce from his market garden, and writing biography (1858–67; never completed). Worked also on other musicological subjects, publishing or editing works of Palestrina, Schütz, Carissimi, Corelli, Couperin, and J. S. Bach, and discovering autograph of Bach's B minor Mass. Modern scholarship has found much fault with the Handel edn.
