Founded in 1882 by the Revd Wilson Carlile, a 35‐year‐old Church of England curate in Kensington, its organization was consciously modelled on that of Booth's Salvation Army. Like the Salvation Army, Carlile's Church Army was dedicated to evangelism among the poor.
