(1701–76), friend and correspondent of Horace Walpole. He contributed greatly to the creation of Strawberry Hill. Walpole referred to him as ‘my oracle in taste…’. He has been credited with more fidelity to antiquity than his fellow connoisseur, the more fantastic Richard Bentley.
