A potent inhibitor of many proteases, including chymotrypsin, papain, chymotrypsin-like serine peptidases, chymases, and lysosomal cysteine peptidases such as cathepsins A, B, C, D, H, and L. It weakly inhibits human leucocyte elastase. It is of microbial origin and several variants are found, all small molecules around 600 Da.
