‘The Tamil Epic’, traditionally attributed to the Jain renouncer Iḷaṅkōvaṭikaḷ, is a poem telling the ‘tragic’ story of Kōvalaṉ (a merchant who squanders his wealth on a prostitute), and his faithful wife Kaṇṇaki, who eventually becomes a goddess.
