Operates as a centre of expertise whose purpose is to promote and disseminate good practice in the teaching of languages in order to raise levels of capability nationally, across all age groups and sectors. It was established in 2003 as the result of a merger between the Centre for Information on Language Teaching and the Languages National Training Organization as part of the National Languages Strategy. It offers support to businesses and language services, as well as to teachers and learners, and is financed partly by central government grants and public funding for specific projects.
