A gyrus within the longitudinal fissure above and almost surrounding the corpus callosum. It is part of the limbic system and is involved in pain sensations, control of visceral responses associated with emotions, and the planning of motor actions. Also called the cingulate cortex. See also anterior cingulate cortex. [From Latin cingere to gird + Greek gyros a circle or ring, alluding to the way it partly encircles the corpus callosum]
