One of a variable number (usually 8–14) of mushroom-shaped projections on the dorsum of the tongue, forming a row anterior to and parallel with the sulcus terminalis. They are approximately 1–2mm in diameter and are surrounded by a trough containing taste buds and serous glands (Von Ebner's glands). They are innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve.
