Quick Reference

A halo phenomenon, consisting of a short arc, showing brilliant spectral colours, centred on the zenith, and normally symmetrical about the line joining the Sun and zenith. It arises from refraction through ice-crystal faces with a 90° included angle, with the light entering a horizontal face and leaving through a vertical one. If the 46° halo is present, the arc may appear slightly above, or tangential to it at its highest point, depending on solar elevation.
