One of the dyssomnias, characterized by persistent or recurrent disruption of sleep, resulting in hypersomnia or insomnia, caused by a mismatch between the exogenous environmental sleep-wake schedule and the person's endogenous circadian rhythm. The disorder may arise from a persistent pattern of late sleeping, jet lag, or shift working. Also called desynchronized sleep rhythm. Compare delayed sleep-phase syndrome.
