(1748–1824) Revolutionary army officer and shipwright, born in Chilmark, Massachusetts. Claghorn constructed the frigate Constitution, the most famous warship in American history. One of the most celebrated shipwrights of the early national period, Claghorn built a carefully crafted masterpiece, much larger and stouter than contemporary warships. He was an officer in Massachusetts regiments during the Revolutionary War and a colonel of militia afterward.
