As Chief Chemist to the US Geological Survey from 1884 to 1925, Clarke systematized the collection and chemical analysis of minerals, rocks, and ores, and also did important work on the composition of the Earth's crust. The first of five editions of his book The Data of Geochemistry was published in 1908.
