British writer on dance and between 1963 and 2008 editor of Dancing Times, Britain's oldest dance magazine. During her long career as one of Britain's leading critics and dance historians she was also London correspondent of Dance Magazine, New York (1943–55); assistant editor and contributor to Ballet Annual (1952–63); dance critic of the Guardian (1977–94) and the author of many books, including The Sadler's Wells Ballet: A History and an Appreciation (London 1955); Six Great Dancers (1957); Dancers of Mercury: The Story of Ballet Rambert (London 1962); Ballet, an Illustrated History (with Clement Crisp, London, 1973, second edition 1992); Making a Ballet (with Crisp, 1974); Introducing Ballet (with Crisp, 1976); The Encyclopedia of Dance and Ballet (editor, with David Vaughan, 1977); Design for Ballet (with Crisp, 1978); Ballet in Art (with Crisp, 1978); The History of Dance (with Crisp, 1981); Dancer: Men in Dance (with Crisp, 1984); Ballerina (with Crisp, 1987).
